A communion party - a menu for children's and adults' tastes

A communion menu has to pass the hardest test in catering: to delight the grandmother and the nine-year-old at once, at one table and at the same time. It's the art of reconciling classics for adults with sure hits for the youngest. We explain how we compose a menu for a communion party so it suits the tastes of both generations - from main courses, through options for children, to a sweet finale from our own patisserie.

For adults: classics done well

Adult communion guests will appreciate proven classics prepared with care. Broth with home-made noodles, a choice of main courses in a meat and a vegetarian version, seasonal salads and dessert make a safe, appreciated base. The signature accents of our kitchen - seasonal additions, refined sauces, aesthetic plating - make familiar dishes taste fresh. It's a menu that surprises not with oddness but with quality. Well-executed classics are the safest and most often praised choice for a family celebration.

For children: sure hits that vanish

The youngest guests have their favourite dishes and it's worth serving them. Broth, breaded chicken with chips, pancakes and pizza Margherita are proven items from our children's menu that vanish from the plates. A separate table for the children makes service easier and lets them eat at their own pace. Children fed what they like are content and calm, which translates into the comfort of the whole party. Simple, well-liked dishes are the best strategy - a communion isn't the moment for culinary experiments on the youngest.

A sweet finale from our own patisserie

The sweet table is one of the favourite points of a communion party, especially for children. A communion cake, cheesecake, meringues and fruit from our own patisserie make a spectacular finale, and in May we supplement it with ice cream that goes faster than anything else. Our own production guarantees freshness and the option to match the desserts to the theme of the celebration. The sweet table is also a great backdrop for photos. Home-made bakes always beat delivered ones - in taste, in looks and in that you settle their ingredients directly with the pastry chef.

Diets and allergies without exception

At a communion party there's almost always someone on a diet - gluten-free, vegetarian or with an allergy. We gather this information in advance and prepare variants of the dishes in the same courses as the main menu. Because we run a full gluten-free menu in the restaurant, catering to diets is standard for us, not a hindrance. This way every guest, whatever their needs, gets a full-value dish. No one feels left out - and that's especially important at a family celebration gathering guests of various ages.

Service rhythm and portion size

A good menu is not only the dishes but also how they're served. We match the service rhythm to the course of the party: lunch after returning from Mass, dessert and the sweet table at a calm pace afterwards. We compose the portions so guests are full but not overfull before the cake. We serve the children promptly at the start so they don't wait hungry. A considered rhythm and the right portions make the party flow smoothly, and guests have time to talk between the successive elements of the menu.

A tasting before the party

A communion menu is best chosen with a fork, not with your eyes in a brochure. At a tasting you'll try the main courses, assess the portions and plating, settle the variants for children and guests on a diet and choose the cake. It's also a good moment to discuss the service rhythm and the details of the sweet table. A tasting gives the certainty that on the day of the communion exactly what you liked will land on the plates. It's worth arranging it before the final reservation, so the menu and hall form a coherent, considered whole.
